ROADWAY SAFETY ACTION PLAN

The City of Long Beach is developing a Roadway Safety Action Plan to identify implementable projects and strategies to prevent traffic fatalities, serious injuries, and improve roadway safety.

The plan development is funded through a grant from the U.S. DOT Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program. As part of the planning process, the City will establish a high-injury network database (HIN) that identifies the most problematic crash locations for pedestrians, cyclists, and automobiles. Once the HIN is established, the plan will provide implementable strategies to improve roadway safety and reduce crashes at these locations. This project will help position the City to make safety improvements to infrastructure that will serve all users.

Purpose of the Safety Action Plan:

  • Prevent traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
  • Develop implementable safe street design solutions for high priority locations.
  • Improve roadway safety for all modes of transportation.
  • Combine public data with the lived experiences of community members to improve safety outcomes.

Plan Development

Between December 2025 and May 2026, existing data on safety within the transportation network of the City of Long Beach will be reviewed and analyzed to establish the HIN. The HIN will also be informed by the City’s comprehensive plan, relevant traffic and safety ordinances, and community input.

Focus groups and public meetings will be convened to gather input from key stakeholders and community members on their lived experiences with safety within Long Beach. Community input will be used to inform the final Roadway Safety Action Plan and its prioritization of safety improvements.
