Description of Services
Established in 2013, the Department of Economic Development and Planning plays a central role in shaping the physical, economic, and environmental future of Long Beach. It supports the business community and manages numerous city grants. The department also advises the City Manager, City Council, and the Planning Board, which it helped establish, on planning and development issues, offering research-based guidance on land use, infrastructure, and policy decisions.
The department’s responsibilities extend to environmental planning, including brownfield remediation, Lloyd Aquifer protection, and implementing complete streets policies that promote healthier, less auto-dependent lifestyles.
