Know the Warnings

The National Weather Service issues hurricane advisories, watches & warnings: know what they mean.

If a Hurricane Advisory is issued, continue to follow weather updates.

If a Hurricane Watch is issued, hurricane conditions are a real possibility and there is a threat of landfall within 48 hours. Follow these steps:

  • Assemble a hurricane supply kit if you haven’t already done so. (See back page)
  • Listen to local radio, TV stations and social media for up-todate storm information.
  • Learn safe evacuation routes inland and the location of official shelters. (see facing page)
  • Fill your car’s gas tank.
  • Bring lawn furniture, outdoor decorations, trash cans, hanging plants and anything that the wind can pick up inside.

If a Hurricane Warning is issued, there is a threat of landfall within less than 24 hours. Follow these steps:

  • Listen to the advice of local officials, it is imperative that you leave if they tell you to do so.
  • If you are not advised to evacuate, stay indoors and away from windows.
  • Know that the calm “eye” of the storm is deceptive. The storm is not over.
