New Lease Agreement with M.L.K., Inc.
A historic vote at last night’s City Council Meeting and a big win for our Long Beach Community!
Last night, the City Council voted to allow the City Manager to enter a new lease agreement with M.L.K., Inc. – ushering in a new era for the beloved community center.
“This is great news for our residents and a testament to our administration’s commitment to moving the City forward”, said City Council President Brendan Finn.
“We are thrilled to announce, after 30 years without a lease agreement and several years of litigation under prior administrations, that M.L.K., Inc. and the City, through dedicated efforts and cooperation, have come to an agreement that will ensure that M.L.K. Inc, will serve our residents for years to come. The Center is a historic and vital part of our community. With M.L.K, Inc.’s new board in place, we are excited to have a partner who shares the vision for a vibrant community center with robust and reinvigorated programming that will restore the MLK Center to its glory.”
The Council Voted to pass the resolution 3-1, but because the vote required a super majority, the measure initially failed. After an executive session, the vote’s lone holdout requested a motion to reconsider. A second vote was held and the resolution ultimately passed.
Congratulations to M.L.K., Inc. and our entire community.
Good things ahead, Long Beach.
