To Obtain A Marriage License

REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENSE

A couple who intends to be married must come in and apply together. You will receive your license the same day. There is a twenty-four hour waiting period and then the license is valid for sixty (60) days.  The license may be used only in New York State.

Each couple must complete a marriage worksheet.  Please download, complete and print the worksheet at home and bring it with you to the office.  You can download the worksheet by clicking here

Proof of Age and Identity

A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting two forms of ID, one from each column below for each person:

 

Proof of Age:

  • Birth Certificate:  Must be a Government issued document with a raised sealUncertified copies or Hospital certificates are not acceptable
  • Baptismal record:  Must include place of birth and parent’s names; copies are not acceptable
  • Naturalization record:  Only original documents are acceptable

 Any of the above documents MUST include a raised seal.

Photo ID - Proof of Identity:

  • Valid Driver's license or valid Non-Driver’s ID(with photo)
  • Valid Passport – Non U.S. Passports must have current VISA.
  • Employment picture ID- Must show an expiration date
  • Immigration record
  • Valid Military ID

A certified translation must be presented for all documents that are not in English.  Notarized translations are not accepted.  Acceptable certified translations are those produced by consulates and embassies.

 

Previous Marriages

Applicants that were previously married must show proof of how all marriages ended whether divorced, annulled or by death. The following are the only acceptable documents:

  • Original Judgment Of Divorce or certified copy
  • Death Certificates (copies are not acceptable.)
  • State or Court Annulments

 

Age Requirements:

  • If both applicants are 18 years of age or older, no consents are required.
  • If either applicant is under 17 years of age, a marriage license cannot be issued.
  • If either applicant is 17 years of age, such applicants must present the written consent of both parents and a justice of the Supreme Court or a judge of the Family Court having jurisdiction over the town or city in which the application is made.
  • Parents, guardians or other people consenting to the marriage of a minor must personally appear and acknowledge or execute their consent before the city clerk. If the notarized affidavit is made before an official outside of the State of New York, it must be accompanied by a certificate of authentication when the consent is filed in New York State.

Fee:

The fee to obtain a license is $40.00 payable in cash.

 

Hours:

Licenses are issued Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 11:00AM and 2:00PM to 4:00PM

(July 1st – September 15th:  9:00AM to 11:00AM and 2:00PM to 3:00PM)
