Sanitation and Recycling

The Department of Public Works oversees the Division of Sanitation and Recycling, which is responsible for the day to day collection of refuse and recyclables throughout the City. The Long Beach City Calendar includes all days that trash and recyclables will be picked up and holidays where sanitation is suspended.

Important Recycling Update

Due to global market conditions and changes to our vendor agreement, the City of Long Beach uses a dual-stream alternating recycling schedule.  Residents and businesses both need to separate paper and cardboard from glass, metal and plastic.

City-wide Residential Recycling takes place on Wednesdays only in a dual stream format, alternating paper and cardboard one week and plastic, metal and glass the next.

Commercial Recycling will continue to take place (7) days a week. Cardboard and paper must be separated from glass, metal & plastics. Both products will be picked up everyday.

High Rises and dwellings on Broadway & Shore Road will have recycling pickup (6) days a week. Cardboard and paper must be separated from glass, metal & plastics. Both products will be picked up everyday. No pickup on Sundays.

Residential and Commercial Sanitation Pickup will remain the same.

Bulk pickup will take place by appointment only on the following days; East End Pickup on Mondays and Thursdays and West End Pickup on Tuesdays & Fridays.
